Math on the Computer?




Some think it is impossible to teach math, problem solving, basic skills and math facts while using a computer.  The computer can do it all for you?  Right?  Not exactly.  Computers are not made to "think." Computers can not interpret human meaning or human logic.  However, computers can use artificial intelligence to identify strengths and weaknesses, among other things.

Carnegie Learning, developed by cognitive specialists and computer science technicians at Carnegie Mellon University, have created and re-invented the way traditional math can be taught and learned through the Cognitive Tutor program.  This year, our 7th and 8th grade Middle School students and our District's HS Freshmen have begun a whole new math experience.   This is a program has 20 years of research and development to assist classroom teachers with delivering a rigorous and relevant math curriculum to meet the needs of all learners.  The Bridge to Algebra and Algebra experience for our students identifies weaknesses in each individual student's mastery of mathematical concepts. It then customizes prompts to focus on areas where the student is struggling, and sends the student to new problems that address those specific concepts.  Each student has a textbook, an online module, and a homework helper.




Mrs. Dempster has been a leader in pursuing this math curriculum for our 7th and 8th grade students and Mr. Claude has embraced this program to support the delivery of HS Alegebra to his students.  It has been  enjoyable to walk into math classrooms to students engaged in their learning while combining 21st century skills to the practical paper and pencil method of teaching mathematics.
